YALE SAILING RETURNS!

Let’s go sailing! Jonathan Ogle, SOM '88 is planning six day sails on his 21’ sloop this summer for YCSF members. He can take up to five people per trip. Here are the details:

Voyage Dates: Saturdays, June 30, July 7 and 28, August 11 and September 15 and 29.

Location: The boat sails from Alameda Marina, 1815 Clement Ave., Alameda. Enter at Gate 7, opposite Schiller Street, drive to the waterfront, park and call me at 415-652-8949. I’ll direct you down the dock to the boat.

Time: Meet at the boat at 1PM on the day chosen. We’ll sail in the Estuary (between Alameda and Oakland) for 4-5 hours, ending at 5 or 6PM. Eat lunch before arriving, but feel free to bring snacks and drinks.

Conditions: The Oakland Estuary is the most benign sailing environment on San Francisco Bay. The area is shielded from the strongest winds, is fog free and often short sleeves warm. It is a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater, but this is mild sailing compared to bashing about near Alcatraz.

The Boat: Serendipity is a classic New England sloop, built in Maine to a design based on the Herreshoff Fish design from 1916. Only 21 feet long, she has a large cockpit for up to six adults and is easy to sail. I sail her single handed all the time. If you know nothing about sailing, no problem, and if you are a sailor and want to take the helm, very well. Your Captain: Jonathan Ogle. Prior to attending Yale SOM, Class of 88, I was a ship’s officer on cargo ships and large sailing vessels. You’ll be in pretty good hands.

The Voyage: Sailing in the Estuary is fun. You’ll see Coast Guard cutters, cargo ships working cargo, Jack London Square, several marinas, a houseboat neighborhood, a floating drydock shipyard, the former presidential yacht, USS Potomac, several yacht clubs and dozens of other boats out for the day. We’ll probably see seals and not long ago there was a whale in the Estuary!
