The Great American Eclipse: Yale Celestial Seminar, Oregon

Space, science, magic, astrology and photography presentations from Yale alumni and leading experts throughout the weekend as we prepare to witness the longest total solar eclipse traversing the United States in a lifetime.

Get ready for a weekend of celestial wonder with fellow Yale alumni and speakers from around the country and globe. Learn the magic behind what is being called the “Great American Eclipse,” bringing travelers from all over the world for a few precious hours of orbital awe in the path of totality. After a weekend of activities for all ages, we will see the stars and planets in the middle of the day just outside Portland, Oregon.

We are lining up an amazing group of guest speakers, including:

- Dr. Lawrence M. Krauss, a theoretical physicist, leading public intellectual, former Yale Astronomy professor, and founder of the Origins Project

- Dr. Alex Boxer (Yale '01) - a physicist, science historian, astrolabe aficionado, and author of the upcoming book: "A Scheme of Heaven: A Modern Look at the History - and Science - of Astrology"

- Ferdinando Buscema, an award-winning Italian illusionist who will give our trip his magic touch

- Eric Schwarz - a cosmic yogi flying in all the way from Australia for this event to make sure our minds and bodies are in interplanetary alignment

- photography experts, and much much more

Behold one of the most significant U.S. astronomical events in our lifetimes in a premier location, about an hour south of Portland. Most accommodations along the path of totality have been sold out for months, but we have secured two otherworldly options for our Yale family:

CAMPING Enjoy a weekend of camping in a privately-owned tulip farm, featuring incredible views of both Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens. Family friendly activities and bucolic pleasures will include tractor rides, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, archery, arts and crafts, wine tastings, beer brewing, beekeeping and honeycombing, campfires, bluegrass jam sessions, yoga, and even a Solar Eclipse 5K.

Enjoy Oregon-ic food and farm to table dinners, smores nights, a pig roast (veggie options always avail) and get an in-depth education of farming including grass seed, sweet corn, pumpkins, tulips, grapes, hops and hemp crops—as we spend the weekend in the farmlands and among lush vineyards.

Then on Monday morning, we will enjoy the Great American Eclipse; an event like this won’t occur again in the USA in our lifetimes. Eclipse-viewing glasses will be shared before we observe the 2-hour spectacle from our prime viewing location.

Return to Portland for flights departing anytime after 2:00 p.m.

4 STAR RESORT AND SPA (limited availability)

For those preferring a more luxurious experience and the chance to explore Portland before the eclipse, enjoy 3-nights of King Suite accommodations at the award-winning Rivers' Edge Hotel and Spa. Nestled on the banks of the Willamette River, this upscale hotel is just a short walk from the heart of downtown. Guests will still have the same keynote presentations and lectures at their hotel, and then will transfer out early Monday morning to the farm for the eclipse.
