Join the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Association on March 21 from 6:15-7:15pm to hear from A Home Away From Homelessness, an organization working to radically alter the trajectory of the lives of children who are experiencing homelessness. Feel free to stay for the YANA bi-monthly meeting happening afterwards from 7:30-8:00pm for updates on the YANA network and events.
A Home Away (https://www.homeaway.org/), now in its 24th year, offers programs that give kids a safe and supportive environment and that foster their strengths, creativity and abilities. The Beach House - a cottage in the Marin Headlands - offers an afternoon of respite from the harsh realities of homelessness and poverty to children in San Francisco and Marin homeless shelters. The School House is a comprehensive after-school learning community for homeless and formerly-homeless students in grades 5-12, providing wrap-around academic enrichment and social support. The Summer Program offers an academic and outdoor education program during summer months that includes reading, writing, and STEM activities, as well as trips to cultural institutions and natural destinations.
Frances O'Sullivan and Alicia Young from A Home Away will lead our discussion. Fran has been part of A Home Away From Homelessness for three years, and she presently serves as board president. Fran will describe the current challenges and opportunities facing A Home Away and the clients it serves. She will also describe their funding model. Fran hopes that YANA members will help her examine questions about how to develop financial security for the organization, making it possible to grow the programs.
