SF Opera World Premiere: Dream of the Red Chamber

Join alums and friends to experience a famous Chinese classic through Western opera. David Henry Hwang (YSD '83) joins composer Bright Sheng to produce a musically staged masterpiece. Hurry, discounted tickets are limited!

You’re invited to gather with other alumni to enjoy the world premier of a new opera commissioned by the San Francisco Opera based on Cao Xueqin’s Chinese epic novel, Dream of the Red Chamber. Composer Bright Sheng joins forces with Yale’s own (and Tony award winning playwright) David Henry Hwang (YSD ’83) to adapt the novel into a two-act opera with English language libretto.

Considered one of China’s four great classical novels, Dream of the Red Chamber details the lives of members of the Jia Clan, whose prosperity is seemingly assured when one of its daughters becomes an Imperial concubine. When she falls from grace, the family’s fortunes plummet. At the heart of this drama is the love triangle between the young nobleman, Bao Yu, and two strikingly different women: one who is his spiritual mate, the other a worldly beauty.
