Grand Lighting Ceremony of the Bay Bridge Aboard the Gas Light (Sailing out of Berkeley)

Don't miss out on this historic event from the best vantage point as Leo Villareal's (Yale '90) light sculpture across the Bay Bridge's western span comes to life!

Date: Tuesday, March 5th
Time: 6:00pm to 10:15pm
Location: Olympic Circle Sailing, One Spinnaker Way, Berkeley
Cost:  $80 for Members, $100 for Non-Members (Includes dinner and beverages aboard the Schooner Gas Light. Attendees are welcome to bring their favorite beer or white wine.)

The Bay Lights is the worlds largest light sculpture — 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high — and was inspired by the Bay Bridge 75th anniversary. Using 25,000 white individually programmed LED lights, internationally renowned artist Leo Villareal will create complex algorithims and patterns in a dazzling display across the bridge’s west span. The Yale Club of San Francisco has been invited by the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley to join their alumni for a front row seat and dinner al fresco, aboard the Schooner Gas Light, for the best of all views of this historic event.

This stunning fine arts experience will live for two years on the San Francisco Bay Bridge’s Western Span, starting with the Grand Lighting on March 5th, and promises to be seven times the scale of the Eiffel Tower’s 100th anniversary lighting.

Known for his light sculptures and site-specific architectural works, Leo Villareal’s art is part of the permanent collections of prestigious museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum in Kagawa, Japan. Recent exhibitions include a survey show organized by the San Jose Museum of Art, which continues to tour several museums in the United States. Leo received a BA in sculpture from Yale University in 1990, and a graduate degree from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Interactive Telecommunications Program.
