Special Performance and Pre-Show of Tontlawald

Sunday, March 4th, San Francisco

You’re invited to a special Yale Club of San Francisco event on March 4th to immerse yourself in Cutting Ball Theater’s original production of Tontlawald.

For this special event, YCSF members will have the bonus of a pre-show conversation with Eugenie Chan (Pierson College ’84) and Suzanne Appel (Yale School of Drama ‘11 and School of Management ’11).  Chan is the theater’s resident playwright and author of the text for Tontlawald.  Appel is the theater’s managing director.

Many people have trouble locating Estonia on a map, no less have awareness of the struggles of the Estonians in achieving nationhood.  For centuries, the Estonian people were serfs in their own lands to a ruling gentry elite who spoke German.  Estonian literature emerged in the 19th Century along with newfound nationalism.  Among the folklore collected and memorialized in the Estonian language during this period was Tontlawald.  “Tont” in Estonian means ghost and “wald” is German for forest.  (For more information on this enchanting folk tale, upon which Chan’s text is based, click “origin” at http://cuttingball.com/season/11-12/tontlawald-3/ )

Tontlawald, as performed by Cutting Ball, will no doubt stretch the definitions of theater, dance and choral music.  This original ensemble-based piece weaves evocative a capella harmonies and visceral movement into a multilayered retelling of an ancient Estonian tale.  The experimental theater production, co-directed by Paige Rogers (a co-founder of the Cutting Ball Theater) and Annie Paladino, with choreography by Laura Arrington, will have its gala world premiere February 24th.

There are a limited number of specially discounted tickets at $18 for YCSF members for the March 4th YCSF event, which are about half the usual price of Saturday tickets.  If you cannot make it on March 4th, as a YCSF member you can qualify for $20 tickets at most other performance times.  Reduced price seating is limited, so reserve your tickets soon.
